Walking to school can help your child to better concentrate when they are in class, build their social skills, allow them to become street smart, gain self-confidence and a sense of responsibility, and become more independent.

Walking to school is an excellent way to incorporate some exercise into your child’s day. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children and adolescents 6 years and older can achieve important health benefits by getting 60 minutes or more of daily physical activity. Active school commuters are also more likely to walk or wheel (cycle, rollerblade, skateboard and scooter) to other places at other times of the day.
Walking is a sustainable transport alternative – it can reduce the congestion around the school, further reducing the pollution in that neighbourhood.
Physical activity can help in maintaining mental wellbeing – the endorphins that the brain releases during exercise help to improve mood, energy levels and even sleep.
Several studies have documented how students can benefit academically from active commuting – exercise can improve cognitive performance and reading fluency.
Shared physical activities can provide students with a sense of belonging.
Walking School Bus Leaders
The WSB leaders are recruited, screened, insured, trained, managed and paid by STWDSTS.
Additionally, WSB leaders are provided with Emergency First Aid – CPR C – AED training via St. John’s Ambulance and have undergone a Vulnerable Sector Check.
